Last summer, me, Lo and a few of our friends put together a zine for something to do, since we'd just finished our a-levels and needed a fun project to fill our time. We created a pro-feminist zine put together with the work of our friends and sold it to cover printing costs and postage. We got quite a good following through social media, and now we're going to make a second issue.
We feel the zine is going to be so much better this time, we have a better knowledge of graphic design, layout and composition, so the overall look and feel will be more professional. We are also more confident with networking and displaying our work to the masses, so the zine will grow in popularity. This time, we've asked some of our friends who worked on it with us previously, but also some of our classmates. We asked them to generate content for us and we arranged it with a layout and colour scheme in mind.
The zine isn't fully finished yet, and it still needs to be printed and sold. We are hoping to contact the village bookshop and get it stocked in there, and possibly around the student union. One of my friends is based in Manchester and he is hopefully going to talk to the manager of a vegan cafe (V-Revolution) and get it stocked in there too. I have a few people I'm close with online who have a lot of followers, so hopefully the zine will grow in popularity organically through social media. We've set up a facebook page, instagram, twitter and a big cartel - to sell the zine online.
Here are some screen shots of the zine so far:
There are still some aspects we need to work on, including layout and finishing touches, but we feel this zine will be more successful than the last now that we have more experience, and its also a good opportunity for us to get our work there and meet new people within the industry.
