BRIEFING:
Today we had our first PPP session with John and Simon. We were told about what needed to go on the blog and we also went through Studio Brief 1, which is an ongoing brief. We need to update our blog regularly on things we find interesting to do with design (and anything else). It will enhance me as a designer and make me think more about what's around me. It will also push me to go to more events and exhibitions around Leeds.
STUDY TASK 01:
Study Task 01 took place today. We were split into 5 small groups and were each given a studio to research, ours was Hey Studio. We had 40 minutes to put together a short 3 minute presentation to answer these questions:
- Who are they?
- Where are they based?
- What do they do?
- How do they do it?
- Why are they unique?
Hey Studio was founded in 2007 and there are 3 members to the team. They are based in Barcelona, Spain, and have just recently opened an online shop. They use bold geometric shapes and bright colours and mainly work in Adobe Illustrator but start with rough sketches. They love geometry, colour and bold typography, and they specialise in brand identity, editorial design and illustration. Here are some examples of their work:
Hey Studio are unique because they are bold, clear and concise. They try to reach a wide audience by making their work simple to understand which links to swiss ideals and modernism. They call themselves an "attitude", not just a design/illustration studio, and they believe that their work transmits this attitude that is always positive.
I personally really like this kind of work. It's simple and concise but also fun and loud. There are an amazing range of colours and shapes in their work and it makes it all really interesting to look at.
The other studios that were presented were Snask, Sagmeister and Walsh, Kontrastika and Build. I really liked Sagmeister and Walsh, they really stood out to me as prestigious designers, because they do a lot of different work and it's just the two of them (with various interns).
Overall I enjoyed todays session and I now know what I need to do for my PPP blog, I will be able to look out for things and post about my interests in design.
